Lexington, Ohio – Juncos Racing rookie Rinus VeeKay picked up two more podium finishes in the 2019 Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires Championship this past weekend at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. VeeKay claimed third in both Round 12 and Round 13.

The seventh event weekend kicked off with one practice session on the 2.258 mile, 13-Turn road course.  Rinus VeeKay (Hooffdorp, Netherlands) set the quickest time overall and teammate Dalton Kellett (Toronto, Canada) finished closely behind in third for the session.

Qualifying for Round 12 finished off the first of three days on track. Kellett driving the No. 67 K-Line Insulators USA/Juncos Racing qualified fifth, followed by VeeKay in the No. 21 Mazda/Jumbo/Juncos Racing car taking the sixth starting position.

Saturday began with qualifying for Round 13. A red flag during the final minute of qualifying would end the session early. VeeKay improved from his previous qualifying attempt to start Round 13 on the front row in the second position. Kellett had a strong run on his final lap but would have to again settle for fifth.

That afternoon the Indy Lights field returned to the track for Round 12. VeeKay and Kellett started side by side in row three. Throughout the first three laps multiple cars spun or went off track, including Kellett on Lap-4. Kellett recovered and rejoined the field, while VeeKay moved into the fourth position. The only caution throughout the 30-Lap race came out on Lap-11 with a car in the tire barrier. After three laps under caution the green flag waved and Kellett was able to improve his position running seventh. Two laps later Kellett was forced to pit after a shoulder belt came undone, and he would go on to finish seventh. VeeKay battled his way to the Top-3, taking the third spot on Lap-24 and would go on to finish third, picking up his eighth podium this season.

The weekend concluded with Round 13 Sunday afternoon. VeeKay took the second starting position, while Kellett started fifth. After the field took the green flag a three-car incident sent Kellett off track in Turn-1, however he was able to return to the track with no damage. VeeKay fell back to third on the fourth lap and would go on to finish third. Kellett finished eighth.

VeeKay continues to hold onto second in the Indy Lights Championship with five races to go.

“It was a tough weekend, we’ve had a few issues but came out of it strong with two podiums,” said VeeKay. “I’m very confident looking forward to the Gateway round in a few weeks’ time. Let’s go get some points back!”

After two tough finishes at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course Kellett sits seventh in the championship.

“Overall it was a character-building weekend at Mid-Ohio,” said Kellett. “We started off the weekend with great pace in practice and in qualifying we had the speed for a Top-3, but some red flags in qualifying throw us for a loop. During the first race I made a mistake early and went off track in Turn-13, but we managed to recover from that quiet well. We made some great passes but had to come into pit lane after my right shoulder belt came off. That was a bit of a freak situation, that you can not plan for and obviously heart breaking for the team. In Race 2 we had some contact at the start but were able to get back on track. The pace once we recovered was great and we could have been in the hunt had we not had that happen at the start of the race. We look forward to taking the pace we gained this weekend into Gateway here in a few weeks.”
