2017 Mazda Road to Indy
Licensing and Registration Guide
All three levels of the Mazda Road to Indy – the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda, the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires and Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires – are sanctioned by INDYCAR.
Below are the steps for interested drivers to advance to a level within the ladder system as well as some additional information.
Driving resumes for each of the three series are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. As a general guideline, the following are suggested experience levels:
- USF2000: a minimum of two years experience in karts and/or cars. Examples of acceptable experience include karting, school cars, SCCA or other amateur club racing, and competition in any championships worldwide.
- Pro Mazda: a minimum of three years experience with at least one year in cars preferred.
- Indy Lights: a minimum of four years experience with at least two years in cars preferred.
Again, driving resumes are reviewed on a case-by-case basis and there may be exceptions to the recommended experience levels noted above.
Submit your Driving Resume
For new drivers who wish to compete in ANY on-track activity in USF2000, Pro Mazda or Indy Lights must submit their driving resume to the INDYCAR competition department for review. Resumes may be submitted to Megan Mattingly at email@example.com. Please allow at least 48 hours for the review process.
Secure Medical Clearance
All drivers wishing to participate in ANY on-track activity must be medically cleared prior to on-track competition. You can obtain medical clearance by scheduling a physical exam with INDYCAR or by having INDYCAR provide you with the proper medical forms for your personal physician to complete your physical exam. Drivers must contact Linda Staletovich at firstname.lastname@example.org to schedule an appointment or to obtain the medical forms.
Substance Abuse Screening
All drivers and crew members working on the car are required to pass a substance abuse screening prior to receiving their INDYCAR license and/or hard card. The screening must be completed at least 48 hours in advance of on-track participation. Please schedule your screening with AEGIS labs by contacting email@example.com or by calling 615-760-2808.
For pre-season substance abuse screening, the following groups will need to be tested:
USF2000 - drivers only
Pro Mazda - drivers and engineers
Indy Lights - drivers, engineers and mechanics
Complete License Application
For drivers 18 years of age and older: Drivers must complete the online licensing application and can apply at https://hardcards.indycar.com. If you are a returning driver, log in using your existing username and password. An email will be sent out when the 2017 registration site is open and will include your username. If you are a new driver, choose the “Create My Account” option. The final page entitled “Acknowledgement of Agreements and Understandings” MUST be printed, signed and returned to Megan Mattingly or Jason Penix at INDYCAR.
For unemanicpated drivers under the age of 18: Drivers must complete the licensing application complete with both parents and witness signatures on legal-sized paper. Please send all original copies containing original signatures to Megan Mattingly. These forms are available on the homepage of https://hardcards.indycar.com, along with a checklist.
Drivers must purchase a test license prior to testing or a race license prior to racing competition and pay the fee. If the driver is only testing and decides to register for the full season or racing, the test license fee that was paid may be applied to the overall cost of a series racing license. Entrant fees are outlined below as well. Please contact Megan Mattingly at firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions.
| License Type ||License Fee |
| USF2000 Driver Full Season ||$525 |
| USF2000 Driver Test ||$200 |

Drivers who are already registered with an INDYCAR sanctioned series may upgrade their license to the series that they wish to compete in at the test by paying the $200 test license fee and completing the upgrade form by contacting Megan Mattingly at email@example.com.
Team Annual Credentials (“Hard Cards”)/Entrant Licenses
For individual crew members to obtain annual credentials, their team must first register as an Entrant via the website (https://hardcards.indycar.com). If the team previously held an Entrant License, the same username and password can be used to log in and renew their Entrant License. An email will also be sent with this information once the 2017 site is open. If it’s a new team, click “Create My Account,” answer no to the “do you have a code” question, and then choose “New Entrant.”
Once INDYCAR Guest Relations receives your original “Acknowledgement of Agreements and Understandings Form” that you were prompted to print out on the last page, the credential representative will receive an email with codes. USF2000 teams receive six codes. Pro Mazda teams receive eight codes and Indy Lights receive 12 codes. These codes are to be distributed to team members and redeemed for an annual credential via https://hardcards.indycar.com.
Please note that any team members who previously held an annual credential may not renew their membership until the team’s Entrant License has been processed by INDYCAR and new codes have been issued. Each team member, regardless of previously held membership, will need a new code for 2017 in order to complete the credential application. Any crew member going over the wall MUST have an annual credential.
Prior to receiving annual credentials, drivers and team members must also produce a negative substance abuse test in conjunction with INDYCAR’s 2017 Substance Abuse Policy. Information regarding this policy and who it affects is available with your credential application or by contacting Megan Mattingly at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The main team contact person may log in at any time throughout the season to manage their annual credential list and may also purchase additional annual credentials through the site. Cost is $500 for each additional credential. If a team member leaves the team, their annual credential can be turned in to INDYCAR and that member’s code is then freed up to be used be a new team member. There is a $50 fee associated with this policy.
INDYCAR does not issue annual credentials to anyone under 18 years of age.
Single Event Credentials
Overview: Each driver/entrant combination receives four guest credentials per event. If additional credentials are needed, requests can be made to the series office and in many cases granted, dependent upon availability at that particular event. USF2000 does not guarantee quantities requested will be filled at all events.
For 2017, USF2000 will again use the online list system for single event credentials. The website and login information will be distributed to teams, who can then manage their guest list online at any time. Guests must arrive at the USF2000 credential office at each track during the scheduled registration hours. They must sign a liability waiver and present photo identification at registration to obtain credentials.
